Combating addiction

Addictions arise normally when a major need in a person’s life is not being met. Sometimes a highly emotional event can act as a trigger, such as a divorce, or being made redundant, or the death of a close family member or friend. A huge dip in the feel-good chemicals required in the brain to help us feel more stable and content can lead to the pursuit of pleasure enduring endorphins through other means, like alcohol or recreational drugs for example.

Addictions are not always triggered by a major emotional event. Life’s over-achievers can fall pray to addictions as well. People who have achieved everything they want to in life often stop deriving pleasure from their everyday activities, leading them to seek pleasure inducing chemical reactions from other means.
