FAQ’s

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a safe, credible and scientifically researched form of modern psychotherapy. It can be effective in helping people with all sorts of emotional issues, from helping alleviate depression and anxiety to boosting confidence and self esteem, tackling fears and phobias and helping with addictions including smoking, alcohol and drugs, aiding weight loss and improving sports performance.

Will I lose control?

No. You will not lose control in any sense. Hypnotherapy is very different to stage hypnosis which you might have seen on television.

The aim of hypnotherapy is to achieve a very focused state of attention, in which for the most part outside stimulus is blocked out. Once we are in this very relaxed state of mind, we have access to the subconscious mind, which is highly susceptible to suggestion and possesses the creative ability to come up with new solutions and ideas. We will use this process to help alter any distorted or negative thought processes and create a more rational, positive and forward looking mindset.

What will happen in a typical session?

In a typical session we will spend the first 15 to 20 minutes engaging in talking therapy and then spend 30 to 40 minutes on the couch taking part in a guided relaxation (similar to meditation but more tailored to your specific needs).

The first session will consist of a one hour initial consultation, in which we will discuss the problem you would like to address and how Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can work.

How many sessions will I need?

It all depends on what you’d like to address by doing hypnotherapy. Tackling smoking will require a one-off 90 minute to 2 hour session. Fears and Phobias will require four, including the first free of charge 1 hour initial consultation. Other issues can require anything from 4 to 5 sessions to 10 to 12. Everyone is different and ultimately it will be up to you and your own assessment of how you’ve progressed.

Will it work?

As with all forms of psychotherapy the results will depend on the skill of the therapist and the client’s level of commitment. We can’t guarantee success, but I have found through experience that the clients who are committed to coming every week, who fully engage in the sessions and take the time to listen to their relaxation recording inbetween sessions are happier with the results.

I can guarantee 100% commitment on my side, as your therapist, to provide complete professionalism, high levels of competency and dedication to making sure we fully address the issue you come to see me with. I have several testimonials displayed here on my website, which are testament to the succes I’ve had so far.

What training and qualifications do you have?

I have obtained my Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diplomer from Clifton Practice Hypnotherapy Training, and am a member of the Association of Solution Focused Hypnotherapists and the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNCH). I am degree educated with an upper second class degree in English Literature.

When shouldn’t you use hypnotherapy?

Anyone who is suffering with psychosis or a personality disorder is not a suitable candidate for hypnotherapy.
