Sleep disturbances

Sleep is so important to our health and wellbeing – it’s our body’s opportunity to restore and refresh and it enables us to function at our best the next day. However, in today’s busy world we often underestimate the importance of a good night’s rest.

Sleep disorders can include insomnia, excessive sleep, night terrors, sleep bruxism (teeth grinding) and nocturnal enuresis (bedwetting during sleep). Some sleep disorders may stem from an underlying medical condition such as a psychological disorder. Others may occur as side effects of prescribed medication.

Scientific research has shown that a particular type of our sleep – Rapid Eye Movement sleep (REM) or dream-sleep – as it is sometimes referred to (which makes up about 20% of our sleep), plays a crucial role in processing any stressful events that have occurred in the daytime. If we don’t get enough of this type of sleep our stress levels can rise leaving us less equipped to deal with the challenges of the following day. When this happens night after night, a back-log of stress is created, which in turn can lead to problems with anxiety, depression and anger management.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can be effective in helping people improve the quality of their sleep. In the first session, we will give a full explaination of the psychology behind the particular disorder in question and what needs to be done to improve things. Subsequent sessions will combine cognitive behavioural techniques with guided relaxation to help restructure any negative or unhelpful thought processes interfering with our ability to get a good night’s rest.

We will also give you a relaxation recording to listen to each night before bed to help improve the quality of your sleep and get you back on track.
